A Quick Read

Overall I enjoyed the book. It was quick read. I liked the build up of their relationship. A couple of reasons I didn't give it more stars is that one it needed to be proofread. There were typos and some of the sentences could have been condensed to make a more effective sentence or point. The other reason being the point of view. The switch in the same paragraph between three people's pov left me confused. I then had to backtrack to try to decide who said what multiple times.

Sweet, Romantic Story. Tugs a Little at Your Heart, But Not too Much

This story follows the lives of two women who have been burned by love: Tess through hard taught personal lessons of the pain experienced when your loves leave you, yes loves because it happened more than once, and Brooke through the pain she experiences when she was a child witnessing the end of her parents’ marriage. Both women have made it a point to protect their hearts, and for Tess, the hearts of her twins as well, from the pain that comes when love goes wrong. The story has a good setup with the chance encounter at the pizza parlor. Both women are drawn to the other and both seem to fight it.

The relationship with the kids is great. Tess’ actions and thoughts about them make you see how close they are, and Brooke just seems to fit right in. There is a bit of tension as the women start to realize their feelings, at different times, of course, but I feel that is where this story fell a bit flat. Yes it was sweet, it has some slight tension, but with more details this story could have been great. For example, when Tess discusses her brother’s death, she is bawling, but all we hear is that kind of pain is something you never get over. A little more build-up of their relationship and instead of just telling us the last year of his life was hard, show us. Providing more details and showing the emotions would have made this a more impactful read.

It also felt like it all came together too perfectly in the end. For two women who were extremely hurt by their pasts and who were scared and determined to stay away from love, it did happen rather smoothly. We are told that Tess and Brooke are both stubborn and they seem to have a lot of spunk, which I love, so I would have expected to see more internal and even external conflict between the two in dealing with love and the new relationships.

The POV changes were slightly confusing at times, but having them gave you more insight into Brooke.

Points of Awesome!:
Trouble as the triplet of twins...genius.
The characters are likeable and have some spunk which makes things interesting.
The story does play out like a movie in your head.
There is a strong family ties element to the story.
Elements of humor, like the twins giving up information about Tess or Murphy’s stubborn behavior, are well done.

Points of Improvement:
I felt there needed to be more details. There were some potentially strong emotional moments in the story where details were vague.
As mentioned, the POVs were slightly confusing, but they are needed for more background details on Brooke.

Overall: I rated this story 3 ½ because it is a good story. If you’re looking to read a sweet, romantic story that tugs a little at your emotions, but not too much, this would be a great book for you. If you’re someone likes me who prefers a strong emotional connection and want to really get drawn into the book, this might not be enough to consider a great read, but you won’t regret reading it either.

I enjoyed the book for what it was. I usually like a little more tension in my books but, well, I guess you can say it was sweet. Kinda dull and predictable. Not something I would read again and I probably won't read the sequel but it was enjoyable enough for a quick read.

An Excellent Overview of Spectroscopy for Undergrads & Grads

Harris and Bertolucci have written an excellent overview of general spectroscopy theory, appropriate for both undergraduate and graduate students. As a chemist, I found it very helpful as I took introductory quantum mechanics in graduate school and later used it as a practical guide to interpreting and understanding infrared spectra as a graduate student.
For the price, this is one of the best bargains available to students. Consider other Dover publications for great prices as well.

An interesting little cookie of a book...

This is probably one of the most useful books that deals with the subject of Molecular symmetry and how it applies to the derivation of IR Spectra, Molecular Orbital Theory, and UV VIS spec. Some parts can be sparse (Term symbol section is a little confusing at first go) so it pays to have a good Quant. book next to you... Lots of problems that are all solved. Excellent reference for some basic QM problems as well... Perhaps the best thing about this book is the fact that it is not (expensive).... So if you have the dosh, then go for it and finally figure out Group Theory and how it relates to IR and everything else...

I may have learned more because of how buggy the code examples were.

I have mixed emotions about writing this review. I must admit that I learned a good bit about node.js and the content walked me step-by-step through with examples that had me coding from page 1. To say this is an early draft is denying that it must be a first draft. The majority (without exaggeration) of the code samples will not run due to differences in variable names throughout the code. Chapter 9 re: RESTful API has an introduction talking about using HTTP verbs (correctly) and then completely ignored them throughout the text. This is actually damaging to someone who doesn't know about REST as they believe they should have urls like "listUsers" to see the list of users and use a GET request to delete a user. Here's the thing...I gave it three stars because I learned more debugging the code examples and thinking through more appropriate approaches to the code examples. Almost makes me wonder if using deliberately buggy code would actually is a more effective way to teach coding topics (with an introduction to set the expectation).
