About the Author
Johnny Long is a Christian by grace, a professional hacker by trade, a pirate by blood, a ninja in training, a security researcher and author. He can be found lurking at his website (http://johnny.ihackstuff.com). He is the founder of Hackers For Charity(http://ihackcharities.org), an organization that provides hackers with job experience while leveraging their skills for charities that need those skills.

Bill Gardner is an Assistant Professor at Marshall University, where he teaches information security and foundational technology courses in the Department of Integrated Science and Technology. He is also President and Principal Security Consultant at BlackRock Consulting. In addition, Bill is Vice President and Information Security Chair at the Appalachian Institute of Digital Evidence. AIDE is a non-profit organization that provides research and training for digital evidence professionals including attorneys, judges, law enforcement officers and information security practitioners in the private sector. I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

With regular breaching of websites/data in the news (e.g. eBay, Three, VTech), this book should be of interest to many.

This book aims to show you what information can be found via Google search queries, much of it never intended for a public audience (e.g. credit card numbers, passwords). The book is targeted at those wanting to protect their sites/data, those wanting to get more out of Google search queries, hackers, and the curious.

Some of the tools are introduced with little discussion, so some degree of IT-awareness is required. Also a few areas require scripting knowledge (typically using perl).

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Google Search Basics

The chapter opens with a look at Google’s deceptively simple interface, being void of clutter and having a single place to enter search criteria. Various related screens are examined, including image search, groups, preferences, language tools, and the results page.

The chapter continues with a look at rules for Google searching, including the use of wildcard characters, and the 32-word search limit. The use of quote marks for exact phrase searching, and Boolean operators for joining/omitting results is discussed with examples. Getting more targeted search results by search reduction is examined.

The chapter ends with a look at the format of the Google URL for submitted queries, where search parameters and their values are separated by an ampersand. Looking at the advanced search page, and submitting a query from it, identifies the names of these search parameters. These can be used subsequently to build your own advanced queries (programmatically).

This chapter provides a useful introduction to the basic functionality available via the Google web page.

The Google groups menu hasn’t appeared on the Google main menu for a while, suggesting the book hasn’t been updated as thoroughly as it might have been. Some of the tools are introduced too abruptly, without sufficient background information for the total beginner.

Useful, well-written discussions, tips, screenshots, practical search examples, inter-chapter links, and website links are given throughout the chapter. A useful summary and a ‘fast track solutions’ section concludes the chapter. These traits apply to the whole of the book.

Conclusion

This book aims to show you what information can be found via Google search queries, much of it never intended for a public audience (e.g. credit card numbers, passwords etc). Having identified various vulnerabilities, it highlights how these can be reduced.

The book is an interesting read, with useful, well-written discussions, tips, screenshots, practical search examples, inter-chapter links, website links, and helpful chapter summaries. The book provides some useful template queries together with approaches to thinking about problems.

The book does assume some IT knowledge and some tools (e.g. Tcpdump, MRTG, Nmap, ntop) are introduced with insufficient detail for the beginner, but this should be ok for many developers.

The book is suitable for those wanting to get more out of Google searching, those wanting to protect their websites/data, hackers, and curious people.

Sometimes the book felt a bit dated. Checking the table of contents with the previous 2007 edition of the book, shows they are around 90% the same. The screenshots should have titles, this would make subsequent searching easier.

Overall, this is an interesting and informative read. In these times of frequent data breaches (e.g. eBay, Three, VTech), this should be required reading for anyone interesting in protecting data. Highly recommended.

Very Much worth the price!

The reason I purchased this book were scammers were trying to rent my house for half the market rate. Law enforcement and the FBI were not able to help. Law Enforcement because it was out of their jurisdiction, plus there was no crime, because money never changed hands. And the FBI because the dollar amount was too low.
With this book I was able to track down the money mule, and was able to get the mules banking information, name, bank routing code, Home address, phone number etc.
The main focus of the book is finding unsecured information over the internet. The tools that were provided were very valuable. One of the tools that I am currently using Alerts me via Email when anyone puts up one of these half price ads on Craig’s list or the internet in general.
Some of the searches I did showed how unsecured the internet really is. With some simple searches I was able to find information that should have been confidential. A must read if you’re a LAN Administrator on how to protect your severs from curious lookers.

Great guide. I highly recommend it for anyone who uses Google, not just Penetration Testers. Some great tips for developers as well, using Google to search a site for web server and programming errors, although by the time Google sees it everyone else does as well.

20 Years Later

Two decades ago, while I was enduring the aftermath of a divorce, an acquaintance "tricked" me into reading this book. (That's an interesting story, but for another time.)

I had heard it said that unless we understand why we married our first spouse, we were almost certainly doomed to remarry the "same person". That I did NOT want to do. So, in order to avoid that dreadful prospect, I began reading this book.

At first I was appalled at Hendrix's explanation of why I had chosen my first wife. In fact, I was so offended (and frightened) by what he said, that I almost threw away the book. However, I was just desperate enough to keep reading. And, I am certainly thankful I did. By the end of the book, I was convinced Hendrix was absolutely right in his explanation of love (as a mental process) and why we choose whom we choose.

A life and relationship changing book. How to help each other heal, instead of hurt.

This excellent book is by far one of THE most enlightening guides on relationships for couples. I was blown away when I listened to it on CD three years ago, being in between relationships. And now, reading it while actually in a relationship is the BEST gift I have given to myself and my partner. ALL relationships are headed in this direction and doomed to fail if one or both people are not conscious of the unconscious, natural process of attraction described in this book. The skills of awareness, and how to communicate, and how to put into ACTION the healing, relating process are invaluable. The best part is that this 20th anniversary edition is the most up to date, improved version that is supported by actual stories of success. At the very least, this book is also an excellent tool to raise anyone's level of consciousness about any type of relationship attraction or interaction. If all the people on the planet were aware of these principles, we could relate to each other in a healing way, instead of hurting each other. A MUST READ. Yet, if you are able to listen while driving long distances or working around the house, the CDs are also excellent.

The upside to this book is that it should get couples to discuss their issues openly. The downside is that Hendrix has his narrow philosophy about where all marriage problems come from, and then conveniently interprets every relational problem within this philosophy. Hendrix's main belief is that we are all looking for partners that will give us what we did not receive from our childhood primary caregivers. Though this may be true in certain cases, to make this the only source of issues in relationships is very simplistic. Relationships are complicated. Simple answers are seldom appropriate. However, this book will get you to think about your relationship and hopefully help you to get to the true root of your relational issues.

Not as informative as it advertised to be!

It had the information I found in the book I was reading the "the Unknown Arabs" by Tariq Berry however it wasn't as informative as I thought no love lost! I will keep it my Islamic/African library!

Dom X by M.S. Parker

This box set by M.S. Parker will entice you into finishing it as quickly as you can. This is Xavier ( goes by X) and Nouri's story and it is written with finesse. If your are a fan of BDSM stories this one has a twist that will surprise you. The Dom in these books are usually male and the sub is female. Due to the extent of X 's burns Nouri is teaching him how to be a Dom to give him back an element of control in his life.

X who is in the military was badly burned in a warehouse fire in a civilian accident which ended his career. On the day of the fire he lost everything that mattered to him. Nouri was his nurse from his admittance to the hospital through his discharge. Both of them were becoming quite attached to each other during this time but would not acknowledge it to themselves or each other. They both have secrets and past hurts that keep them apart.

When X is discharged he returns to his home in Philadelphia and when the priest who is his only family contacts Nouri to come to take care of him that's when sparks begin to fly. Into all of this add Nouri's ex-boyfriend and their mutual attraction that neither one is willing to bring out into the open. This story is extremely well-written and entertaining. The way M.S. Parker weaves all aspects of the story to the conclusion will keep you on your toes. Since I do not believe in giving any spoilers away I will let you know that this book is worth your effort.

Very very touching and beautiful book

Glad i wanted to read these as a boxed set! M. S. Parker this set rocks. Please note folks if you are thinking that this set is about Dom/Sub relationship than this might not be the one for you. This book is about a brave solider who while home on leave, saves the life of a boy and a man in a burning building. Because of this he was hurt badly. He was taken home to Philly by the priest who had basically raised him later in life.

One of the nurses at the hospital in Texas would sit by his bed and talk to him. It seemed that they had a connection even when Xavier or X was not able to speak. Nori later would come to Philly to care for X in many ways.

The Dom part of this book might throw you off a bit but for me it is really cool and loving and in a way it is how I think many folks find their inter-self or kink.
I highly recommend this book.

MS Parker this has to be the most emotionally charged book that you have written, the ups and downs had my heart all over the place.

I have to admit that after reading book one I was a little confused about how Xavier, aka X, fit into the title of the book, but once I started reading the next books in the series, it all started to make sense and this book did not disappoint.

Nori and X have moved to the top of my most loved couples from MS Parker, they both have emotional baggage that is holding them back from giving into each other and for X its also that he thinks he does not deserve to have something as amazing as someone like Nori. Running hot and cold with each other seems to be the norm for X and Nori, and then even colder when Nori's ex shows up and confesses that he wants her back. The ups and downs between Nori and X will pull at your heartstrings and have you crossing your fingers hoping that Nori and X will realize how perfect they are for each other.

Will things work out between Nori and X, or is it too late for them?

About the Author

Hugh Barton is Emeritus Professor of planning, health and sustainability at the University of the West of England, and the author or editor of a series of innovative books including Sustainable Communities and Healthy Urban Planning (both 2000), Shaping Neighbourhoods (2010), and The Routledge Handbook of Planning for Health and Well-Being (2015). He is a recognized international expert, acting as special advisor to the World Health Organization Healthy Cities movement. A town planner by training, he has spent most of his career teaching planning, urban design and sustainable development at the University of the West of England, Bristol. His research and consultancy has focused on low carbon urban form, inclusive appraisal processes, and the integration of health and well-being into planning. Since ‘retirement’ in 2012 he has continued writing, and participating in academic and professional engagements, while devoting time to community activism, music-making, tennis and a growing number of grandchildren.
