Unlike many other books on management that I have read, this one offers tons of useful information, presented in a very reader-friendly way. It is easy to read, very engaging and very competent. A must-have book for young and/or established managers in the arts and creative industries from all over the world.

The authors trace the career of Buddy Holly, the West Texas rock 'n' roller in great detailhis youth in Lubbock, early performances, the formation of his group the Crickets, the fame that followed the hit song "That'll Be the Day" (based on a line spoken by John Wayne in The Searchers) and the plane crash that killed him in 1959. Holly's "hold on his fans is to be explained by his very humanity," the authors maintain, and, appropriately, they take pains to separate fact from legend. The book concludes with a look at the current "Holly Renaissance." A superb collection of 160 illustrations (photos, maps, clippings, ads, etc.) is spoiled in part because they are reproduced in miniature to fit within the pages' outer margins. Nevertheless, this is indeed the "definitive biography," based on years of obsessive research, including 22,000 miles on the road logged by Goldrosen while interviewing friends and acquaintances of Holly. Rave On!

This is, hands down, the best biography of Buddy Holly available. I have read them all and though others have their moments (mainly rare photos) they are spoiled with proven factual errors and unsubstantiated rumors. John Goldrosen's book is the standard by which all others are judged.

Goldrosen is a stickler for accuracy and his research is meticulous. He also keeps close to all things Buddy Holly. I first met him at the dedication of the Buddy Holly statue in Lubbock in 1986. Bill Griggs (founder of the sadly discontinued Buddy Holly Memorical Society) thinks highly of Goldrosen and there is no higher compliment for a historian of Buddy Holly.

The updates keep making the book better (and more accurate) but I will always keep my first copy which I've had signed by Buddy's parents, his brothers, Jerry Allison, Niki Sullivan, Joe Mauldin, and, of course, the author John Goldrosen. If you only read one biography of Buddy Holly, this should be the one. If you have read others and would like to know what Buddy was really like, get the latest edition of this book. You will not be disappointed.

Update 2005: Sad to note that this book is out of print. So is the earlier version titled "The Buddy Holly Story" by the same authors. It's still worth reading if you can find a copy. Check your local library or used book store. Hopefully another publisher will pick up the book and it will be available again.

The best biography of Buddy...and best balanced...

I've been a fan of Buddy's since he was still alive. This is the best biography available. The authors do not deal in sensationalism and wacko explorations of Buddy's sex life or possible contributions to the crash of the plane. He died at 22, and was only famous for two years, and never was wealthy. He can be expected to have had moments of immaturity, and to have made mistakes in judgement. But the overwhelming evidence is that he was a nice, normal young adult with abnormal talent for singing, songwriting, guitar-playing and record-producing. He's been gone for more than 40 years, and he left about 80 recordings behind. Those performances are still wonderful, and this book tells you a lot about how they were created and captured and preserved. Who needs anything else?

Still the definitive Buddy Holly biography

This is a detailed and complete biography of Buddy Holly's life and career. It is accurate and has a good index. The more recent Ellis Amburn biography has an impressive bibliography, but unfortunately numerous errors have been found in it. This makes the Amburn book useless as a reference as the reader cannot trust it. Not so with the Goldrosen and Beecher book: it is accurate and is still the definitive reference for Buddy Holly fans. I strongly recommend the Goldrosen and Beecher book over the other more recent biographies for its completeness, accuracy and ease of use. If you want to own only one book about Buddy Holly, this is the one to get.

This is not your boring textbook or reference book

I'm only 50 pages into it, but it's exactly what I'm looking for. It's very readable and very approachable. The writing is somewhat technical, but very well explained. This is not your boring textbook or reference book.

I'm a high school teacher looking to start a game development course using Unity and C#. This book looks like it could easily be the text for the class or at the very least a fantastic supplement. The tone and apparent philosophy of the author matches up with a progressive educational philosophy. He says "The only way to learn new tricks is to find the necessity to solve a new problem for which I haven't already figured out a solution." As a teacher I couldn't agree more! That is the very reason I want to start a game dev class.

I've been working with Unity for almost 12 months and using C# for about 9 months. The book has taught me plenty in the first 50 pages that I couldn't and haven't learned on YouTube or in a handful of other books. This book is about programming. It's not a walk-through of the interface or how to import art work. It's probably not the best "first book" if you don't know Unity. But! If you're figured out the basics in Unity and are looking to flesh out the programming side then just push the button. Buy it. Well worth the price of admission.

Update: I'm now about 250 pages in and it's still a great book. If you're REALLY wanting to learn to program Unity with C# this is the book. The rest that I've read just scratch the surface leaving me searching the internet for additional info. Now if someone would just write an equally good book on networking/multiplayer in Unity...

I love this book and have learned so much about programming, especially coming from the artist perspective. This book is like a bible to me.

The author has taken the time to address the issues of the files missing on github, so I have changed my rating from 4 stars to 5.

I love the book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn at their pace and really understand the nuances of C# in Unity3D. =)

I love the short,concise paragraphs, nothing makes my eyes glaze over like a wall of text and I loved the bits of computer science history the author throws in in context. He obviously really loves the subject matter. Highly recommended!

About the Author
Martin R. de la Pena, a veterinarian and ornithologist, studies the reproduction of birds, on which he has published three books, alongside a dozen others, in his native Argentina. He has also produced several films on the life of birds. Maurice Rumboll, one of Argentina's top naturalists, directs environmental education programs for students and plans interpretive trails, brochure texts, and visitor centers for his country's National Park Administration, whose Ranger Training Institute he formerly headed. Previously he directed visitors' services and research at Iguazu National Park and served as Traveling Naturalist for the Argentine Museum of Natural History.

Good guide, but could be improved. I would recommend it.

I took an extended trip (2 months) through Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. This book was adequate and quite useful. I wish the range maps weren't in the back of the book, it slows you down a bit. However, from what I have seen, this is probably the best book to carry if you will be traveling over a large part of the region. The pictures are pretty good, but not great. The descriptions are also pretty good, but not great. I understand some concessions had to be made in order to make it a compact field guide. Overall I think a good job was done of balancing information/size of the book. If you can get by without regional range maps then "Birds of Chile" might be the way for you to go. It is a slightly better quality guide. If you want the range maps for the entirety of South America, and you need a compact, "backpacker friendly" guide, then don't hesitate to purchase this one.

Very Portable and Useful Little Guide

I am going birding in Bolivia -- which does not yet have it's own field guide -- later this year. So instead of carrying one guide I need to figure out which combination of books will strike a balance between usefulness and space/weight. I have a feeling this is going to be one of my main resources. It is very portable and so far about 85 percent of the birds I may potentially see are in here. In no way is this book intended to replace a full scale field guide such as "Birds of Columbia" by Hilty or "Birds of the High Andes" but then again it is less than one quarter the size and weight. Also, FYI -- it is quite a bit more than merely an illustrated checklist: you do get a small one paragraph description for each bird, a range map at the back which is a little inconvenient but many full size guides use this format also. The book is probably a little out of date as far as some of the finer points of taxonomy -- but many of the recent arguments are at least explained. All in all -- I feel this will be a very useful book to have along, though it will definitely not be the only book I'll have along.

A mandatory book for South American birders

De la Peña & Rumboll's "Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica" is a well illustrated field book with more than 1,000 species of birds from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, southern Brazil and southern Bolivia, plus Antarctica. Easy to use and carry in the field, one can identify any species fast, being either a male, a female or a juvenile in many cases. Illustrations from Non-Passerine birds are more accurate than Passerine birds. Each plate has the English vernacular name, the latin name and some key informations about the bird sighted as colors (male and female, whether this is the case), habitat and even vocalization in some cases. Unfortunately, the distribution maps for all species are useless and should come after the description of any bird. Despite of the maps, this book is really a good purchase, a mandatory book for South American birders.

still an excellent dictionary, but fewer interesting side notes

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language has been my favorite dictionary for many years. I just bought the fifth edition (2084 pages), and still have the first (1550 pages) and fourth (2074 pages). In this review, I'll discuss two items -- the entries themselves, and the side notes for various words.

For the entries, I looked at a short section near the word "dictionary." Compared to the fourth edition, the fifth edition dropped "didapper" (a type of grebe) and added "dicyclomine" (a medical drug); this reflects a greater emphasis on technical words. (This continues a trend that has been occurring since the first edition -- dropping "Dictograph" and "Didache" and adding "dictyosome" and "didanosine.")

To me, the outstanding feature of the American Heritage Dictionary has been the side notes -- not just synonyms, but also usage notes, word histories, etc. Unfortunately, in this respect, the fifth edition is considerably weaker than the fourth.

In the L section through "limbo", the fourth edition has 24 words with side notes (excluding synonyms), but the fifth edition has only 13. That is, about half of the old side notes are gone. The fifth edition no longer has a word history for "lemon", a usage note for "lifestyle", or a regional note for "lightning bug." There is also a small reduction in the number of words with synonyms.

These side notes made the American Heritage Dictionary fun for browsing, and the fifth edition is much weaker in this regard than the fourth. It's still an excellent dictionary, but less interesting and enjoyable than the previous edition.

Indispensable!

I tutor elementary students in language arts and am a substitute teacher; the AHD Fifth edition was a replacement for my outdated AHD Third edition. I don't own electronic gadgets and, unlike another reviewer who wasn't happy thumbing through a seven pound tome (my scale registered the book at eight pounds, if that's important), I use my dictionary almost daily. The fifth edition includes color images; the guide words and entry words are printed in a nice blue. I would have liked a dust jacket, but the binding is study and will withstand frequent use with minimal wear and tear (though the light fabric may suffer from fingerprints). Have to admit I shook my head in bewilderment at some of the new entries, especially "ginormous" and "conversate."

Learning/education is a lifelong process, and a dictionary is as essential to a home as plumbing and electricity! Instead of purchasing new software for that gaming device or a ginormous TV for the family room, consider purchasing the American Heritage Dictionary for a holiday family gift instead. It's affordable, will last a lifetime, and may even become a family heirloom!

A review by Don the Baptist of “The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. Fifth Edition”. While I usually do not write book reviews without reading the text in its entirety, this is an exception to said rule.

I have had this dictionary for about three months, and I am completely satisfied. The user will find an abundance of full color photos throughout the text. In fact, it is easy to look-up one word, and then get stuck reading the definitions of other words. This never happened with my other “jumbo” dictionaries.

Unique to this work are “word histories” and “usage notes” which I find to be both helpful and interesting.

Lastly, with over 2,000 pages, the information that you want is probably within its pages.

Again, I am satisfied with my purchase.
